NEWS: Recently submitted as a news article: [link]
Old news for you, but I thought this subject might deserve a bit of a bigger audience....
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I feel so spoiled.....and a bit stupid, too...... It seems that every time I announce it's my last journal for a while (which I announce to use it for a special feature that can last for a long time, since it can't be renewed) some real altruistic person pops up to extend my sub........ Wish the real world was as kind as this community ;)

No....I wasn't expecting this, but I do enjoy it and I'll promise to make niiiice use of it, many new features to come.
:thanks: *Sundri &^KevLewis!

B Y E . B Y E . B E A U T I E S....?
But -back to business- for now I'd like to to pay some special attention to our co-planet-inhabitants: The Animals.
Since you're watching a nature photographer, I assume you are an AnimalLover, too and as we all know: many animals are not doing so well lately.....

So I planned on making a beautiful collection here of critically endangered species, just as a reminder: We love them and it's our responsibility to make sure that they won't get extinct, like many did already.

Maybe you feel like there's not much you can do, but everything starts somewhere. Just realize that if we ignore the situation there will be a day that all we've left is some beautiful photos to prove how beautiful earth used to be....

NIW: It was really hard to make a collection, since there are so f*cking many animals on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species:

"Life on Earth is disappearing fast and will continue to do so unless urgent action is taken. There are now 41,415 species on the IUCN Red List and 16,306 of them are threatened with extinction".

I got a little discouraged to say the least.....;(
So......please have a look....think about it and....think some more, thanks! :blowkiss:

most adored and protected rare animals, and is one of
the few in the world whose natural inhabitant status was

Cheetahs are included on the
World Conservation Union (IUCN) list of vulnerable
species as well as on the U.S. ESA:
threatened species.
Approximately 12,400 cheetahs remain in the wild
in twenty-five African countries

The Bornean species of orangutans
is highly endangered and the Sumatran species is
critically endangered

The total estimated wild population of the
snow leopard is between
4,000 and 7,500 individuals.
In addition, there are 600-700 animals in
zoos around the world.
endangered.

The Western Lowland Gorilla is the
most widespread and common gorilla, but is classified as
Critically Endangered because its population
had declined over 80 percent in 10 years.
The Western Lowland Gorilla is critically endangered
due to the Ebola virus and their main predators:
man (poachers) and leopards.

Bonobos are an endangered species,
due to both habitat loss and hunting for bushmeat,
the latter activity having increased dramatically during
the current civil war due to the presence of heavily armed
militias even in remote "protected" areas.
Today, at most several thousand Bonobos remain.
This is part of a more general trend of ape extinction.
Endangered.

The Golden Lion Tamarin is an
endangered species and among the
rarest animals in the world, with an estimated wild
population of 1,000 individuals and a captive population
of approximately 500.

The critically endangered Amur Leopard
is possibly the rarest subspecies of leopard in the world
with estimates of between 25 to 34 known individuals
remaining in the wild.

The threat to the African elephant
presented by the ivory trade is unique to the species.
Larger, long-lived, slow-breeding animals, like the
elephant, are more susceptible to overhunting than
other animals. They cannot hide, and it takes many
years for an elephant to grow and reproduce.

Red Wolf: Critically endangered species.
Two subspecies are extinct in 1930/ 1970.<

The Siberian tiger / amur tiger is critically endangered.

Asiatic Lion: Critically endangered.

TheHyacinth Macawis considered an
endangered species due to overcollection for the cage
bird trade and by the use of their feathers by the Kayapo
Indians of Gorotire in southern Brazil. These Indians use
the feathers to make headdresses and other baubles for
the tourist trade.

TheForest OwletThe Forest Owlet remains

Wonderful journal as usual, and yeah, it got me a little discouraged as well. I look at that list and all I see is the hand of man. We can do so much good in this world, but we are capable of so much evil. It makes me so angry every time I hear about some elephant or rhino hacked apart just so some idiot can get a bigger erection, or so that someone can have a gorilla foot for show and tell.

Makes you feel helpless sometimes...

.... ;___; i feel a bit harassed. as one single person, my influence is next to nothing.

i know these species are endangered and 'educate' people of these things at the few and rare chances i get. (that is some curious kid or a topic in random convos)

x__x i don't have energy to be concerned about the wildlife.

homeless domestic animals are currently my source of stress. long emo ramble in my journal about it.

Yup....I feel rather helpless, too......and of course I have my doubts if a simple journal like this could change the tiniest bit, but......doing anything is better than doing nothing at all and if it helps at least one person to think a little deeper......
Tnx for reading & commenting.....!

wonderful journal. I like your choises but on the other hand you only chose mammals which inhabit the land. What about fish, birds and sea mammals? I would have liked a mixture of all kinds of endangered species.

But still a very nice job. It is so sad, that many species will be gone soon. Too many different threads to them to eliminate them all - and many people only think about profit, they do not care about those kinds of problems. the few "good" humans seem to be helpless against all the "bad" people.

Totally agree.....my actual plan was to make a collection with several species including -indeed- fish, frogs, birds etc.....
I didn't plan on picking the familiar ones only, but also some less ';popular' animals.
But I drowned in the enormous amount of species.... I spend a few hours for making a selection but most lists only contain latin names which makes searching really hard. And I wanted the text accompanied with a good quality & attractive photograph of this particular animal....To put it shortly: due to the complexity I decided to keep it simple.
But.....If you know some 'missing' endangered species and you know a good photo of it here on DA, I'll gladly add it. (but please, be quick, my sub end's today, which means my journal will stay, but I can't edit anymore...)
Tnx for commenting!

Environment Minister Marthinus van Schalkwyk said the government was left with no choice but to reintroduce killing elephants "as a last option and under very strict conditions" to reduce environmental degradation and rising conflicts with humans.

"Our simple reality is that elephant population density has risen so much in some southern African countries that there is concern about impacts on the landscape, the viability of other species and the livelihoods and safety of people living within elephant ranges," van Schalkwyk said.

Yup.....as if elephants population is the only population to increase....What about us? I think human kind is growing way faster, but no one mentions that: killing humans "as a last option and under very strict conditions" to reduce environmental degradation and rising conflicts with elephants might be a better idea.....
